In the meantime, here’s a bit more about why wrapping before boxing is important and a simple breakdown of how to do it.

Why is it important to wrap your hands for boxing?

Efficient wrapping provides essential padding between your wrists, hands and gloves ensuring from the very first punch you are properly protected. Technique and strength are a powerful match when it comes to boxing and being prepared is key. All of your boxing kit is an investment into the quality of your training and plays a role in keeping you protected.

How many pairs of boxing wraps do you need?

While one boxing wrap is all you need to get started, it’s worth having a couple of pairs as you will want to wash them regularly. Sweaty, smelly wraps are a sign of good training! Make sure you choose wraps that are decent quality and durable, this way you will ensure they provide top protection to keep your punches strong and powerful.

Step by step wrapping instructions for boxing

  1. On your wraps find the loop. Loop this around your thumb then wrap behind the hand, make a fist to test the tension. You want the wrap to feel nice and snug without being too tight that it’s uncomfortable.
  2. Wrap two or three times around the wrist to support the bones and tendons, you will feel what is best depending on your hand and wrist size as each boxer is different. Make sure your hands do not feel too restricted.
  3. Make sure your fingers are spread equal distance apart, and wrap two or three times around your palm. Feeling comfortable so far?
  4. Now cross the wrap two or three times through each finger, and cross over the back of your hand.
  5. Protect your knuckles and make sure they are secured, then wrap between the ring finger and pinky and wrap down to the bottom of your hand.
  6. Wrap around the thumb one time then continue down the back of the hand then lock your thumb. Now go behind the palm and down the hand. Nearly done…
  7. Wrap two or three times around the knuckles then secure the velcro onto your wrist.
  8. Try throwing a few punches and make sure your hands and wrists feel comfortable before you put on your gloves.
